Maiija Crossover

A feminine cardigan with a special twist: the Maiija Crossover is worked seamlessly top down, featuring modified raglan increases without in-between stitches, an elegant V-neck, and neat I-cord finishes. Light balloon sleeves and the overlapping wrap shape make this crossover wearable both as a cardigan and—depending on styling and closure—almost like a sweater.

The pattern is thoroughly illustrated and guides you step by step, including a size guide, schematic drawing, design examples, and many practical tips. Ideal for experienced knitters looking for a distinctive garment.

FAQs

FAQ – Maiija Crossover

Who is the Maiija Crossover suitable for?

For experienced knitters (●●●●○) who are familiar with increases, top-down construction, and neat finishes such as I-cord.

How do I choose the right size?

Use the finished bust circumference as your guide and plan for 12–15 cm of positive ease. If you are between sizes, choose based on your preferred look: closer fit = smaller size, more relaxed = larger size.

Does it wear more like a cardigan or a sweater?

Both are possible. The overlapping wrap shape lets you wear it as a crossover cardigan, or—depending on styling and closure—more like a V-neck sweater.

What is “modified” about the raglan?

You work a modified raglan without in-between stitches. This creates a clean, modern raglan line. Background & reasons are explained in the blog post “Modified Raglan: 5 Reasons”.

Which techniques should I be confident with?

Stockinette stitch worked flat, raglan increases (right- and left-leaning), picking up stitches under the arm, and I-cord finishes. The matching videos are linked in the technique section.

Which yarn option is the most straightforward?

A single strand yarn with good stitch definition (e.g. Babysilk Fluffy solid or Linno DK) is usually the most straightforward. Silky Kid held double is especially light and fluffy, but requires a bit more attention to tension and strand handling.

Can I use a different yarn?

Yes. The key is to match gauge: 16 sts × 22 rows over 10 cm (washed & blocked). Choose a yarn with a similar meterage and the fabric qualities you want (mohair/alpaca = softer and airier; linen content = cooler and crisper). This blog post includes many options: “Which yarn makes the Maiija Crossover perfect? 7 style recommendations.”

Do I need to knit a swatch?

Yes—definitely. Because of the fit, raglan construction, and crossover closure, gauge has a big impact on how the shoulders and chest sit.

Can I adjust sleeve or body length?

Usually without any problem. Length adjustments are easiest before working the I-cord edges. Plan a bit of extra yarn if you want more length.

How many buttons do I need—and can I change them?

The pattern uses 6 buttons (18 mm). You can adjust size and number as long as the spacing stays balanced and the overlap closes securely.

What is included in the PDF?

A 9-page PDF with step-by-step instructions and photos, size guide & measurement chart, schematic drawing, design examples, a checklist, and yarn suggestions including substitutes.

How do I receive the pattern?

As a digital PDF download immediately after payment. No shipping by email or post. For personal use only.
