Gween Cardigan, Knitting Pattern
A clean, timeless cardigan with a V-neck and a European shoulder.
The Gween Cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down. The European shoulder construction creates a balanced fit and an elegant silhouette.
With its straight cut, long sleeves, and classic button band, it’s versatile to wear – simple, unisex, and modern at the same time.
A piece with character.
Timeless. Clean. Durable.
Thanks to the top-down construction, all lengths can be individually adjusted to your measurements.
Construction
The cardigan is worked from the top down in stockinette stitch.
First, the back is worked, then the right and left fronts. For the body, back and fronts are joined and continued flat. The cardigan ends with a ribbed hem.
Sleeves are picked up directly from the side edges of the front and back and worked in the round in stockinette stitch. Finally, the front band is worked.

FAQs
Which size should I knit?
Use the finished chest circumference of the cardigan as your guide:
(100/107/113/120/126.5) (131/140/147/153/158) cm.
The Gween Cardigan has a straight fit and is meant to be worn with positive ease. If you prefer a closer fit, choose the smaller size; for a more relaxed fit, choose the larger one.
Can I adjust the length?
Yes. Thanks to the top-down construction, you can easily adjust both body and sleeve length to suit your measurements. This will also affect yarn usage.
Is the cardigan beginner-friendly?
You’ll knit mostly stockinette stitch and seamlessly, which is very doable. However, you should feel confident knitting flat and in the round, picking up stitches for the sleeves, and working the button band.
What does “European shoulder” mean?
The European shoulder construction creates a balanced fit across the shoulders and upper back. It results in a clean, stable shape and a lovely line at the V-neck.
Can I use a different yarn?
Yes. The important thing is to match the gauge:
10 × 10 cm in stockinette = 20 sts × 28 rows/rounds on 4 mm needles (washed and blocked).
If your yarn has a different yardage, adjust the required amount accordingly.
Why are so many yarns listed?
The design works well in different yarn qualities—from classic wool to a held-double combination. This lets you adjust the overall character: crisp and sturdy, softer, or lighter/airier.
How does the held-double version with Tynn Peer Gynt + Tynn Silk Mohair work?
You knit Yarn A together with Yarn B as if they were one strand:
Yarn A: Tynn Peer Gynt + Yarn B: Tynn Silk Mohair.
This makes the fabric softer and slightly lighter while keeping the same gauge.
Do I really need to wash the gauge swatch?
Yes—definitely. The gauge is measured washed and blocked. Many yarns change after washing, which directly affects fit and length.
How many buttons do I need?
You’ll need 7 to 9 buttons (approx. 18–21 mm diameter). The exact number depends on your size and the length you choose.
Can I wear the button band without buttons?
Yes. You can wear the cardigan open, or reduce the number of buttons. What matters is that the band is worked neatly and the spacing feels right to you.
Are the sleeves knit on directly?
The sleeves are picked up from the side edges of the front and back pieces and then worked in the round. This creates a clean, seamless transition.
I want the cardigan wider or narrower—can I do that?
The fit is straight. The easiest way to change the width is by choosing a different size. Further modifications are of course possible, but they require some experience and will affect the proportions.
