Riika Top – Knitting Pattern (PDF)

The Riika Top is a simple, sleeveless summer top worked in ribbing – clean, versatile, and easy to style. Depending on your yarn choice, it can be worn as a light top or as a neat slipover for layering.

It is worked seamlessly from the top down. The front and back are started separately in rows, then joined and continued in the round. The neckline and armholes are shaped with leaning increases, and the finishing bands are picked up and worked afterwards for a clean edge.

The pattern is suitable for confident beginners with some experience (working in the round and making increases). All steps are explained in detail.

FAQs

How is the Riika Top worked?

The Riika Top is worked seamlessly from the top down. The front and back are started separately in rows, then joined and continued in the round. Neckline and armholes are shaped with leaning increases, and the finishing bands are worked afterwards.

Which yarns work well for Riika?

Riika works with many yarns. Plant-based fibres and linen blends create a cool, crisp summer fabric. Wool blends or sock yarns give more structure and are perfect if you want to wear Riika as a slipover.

Can I wear Riika as a slipover?

Yes. With grippier yarns (for example Bio Balance, Alice, Saona or a sock yarn), Riika becomes more structured and works beautifully for layering.

What gauge do I need?

  • Stockinette stitch: 28 sts × 40 rows = 10 × 10 cm

  • Ribbing: 30 sts × 40 rows = 10 × 10 cm

Always swatch in ribbing, as it is crucial for fit.

Which needle sizes are used?

Depending on your yarn and gauge: 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm and 3.0 mm circular needles. For neat edges in the twisted-stitch ribbing, you may prefer a needle 0.5 mm smaller for the first rows.

Can I adjust the length?

Yes. Simply work more rounds for the body to make Riika longer. Allow a little extra yarn if you plan to add length.

How do I choose my size?

Riika is designed to be close-fitting or with 0–5 cm of positive ease. For a looser slipover look, choose at least 5 cm of positive ease. Compare the finished bust measurement with your own bust circumference.

Is this pattern suitable for confident beginners?

Yes, if you have some experience working flat and in the round and are comfortable with increases. The pattern includes detailed instructions and photos.

How do I wash and care for my Riika Top?

Care depends on your yarn. Plant-based blends are usually easy to wash on a gentle cycle. Wool and silk blends should be washed gently (hand wash or wool cycle) and dried flat.
